"Ze" and "hir" at college
I would hope that there is a middle ground between defining ourselves based on gender and dismissing gender as utterly irrelevant to identity. Grinnell's policy stands in stark contrast with President Garvey's move at Catholic. The more fundamental shift, though, is expressed by Grinnell's director of residence life:
“A couple decades ago, colleges were expected to behave as parents,” Conner said. “Today we are treating students like adults and letting them make their own decisions.”
As both a parent and as a former 18 year-old, I would vote for a little more willingness on the part of college administrators to play the parental card from time to time.

“Today we are treating students like adults and letting them make their own decisions.”
Yeah, except these "adults" are not supporting themselves in most cases and are still on the dole of mommy and daddy. To me, that sounds like perpetuation of adolesence. That quote made me remember a controversy over birth control at my alma mater. The health department there did not carry contraceptives at any time, but when there was a chance that the local Catholic hospital would take a role in the campus health center, it was kitty bar the door for the snotty campus paper. Several editorials and a front page story (with condoms and b/c pills next to pictures of Mary) decried the possible influence of a Catholic hospital at the health center, despite the center had never passed out contraceptives and nothing would have changed.
One writer declared on and on how "we are adults and need to make our own decisions." Really--so as an adult she couldn't walk three blocks to the CVS to buy her own?
Adults? Yeah, right. Todays college students are *less* like adults than when colleges did take a more active "parental" role. Imagine that! You don't need a crazy conservative Catholic like me to say that...just talk to any employer.
*off my soapbox*:)
